Brief Standoff

We joined a powerful formation of dragons: a flock of destruction is what I would call it, or an armada of wings and talons and fire. A Royal Guard of Crimson dragons surrounded Kon, so I only glimpsed him once or twice. Brenna was in her own well-organized collection of rather mean-looking military dragons, but they moved to the back of the formation. And in the lead of it all were the Quant dragons. By my count there were at least fifty of them, each with a basket of slaves. Flying above everyone was a flock of those oversized ravens to pass messages back and forth.

Brax and I kept to one side of the formation. This was the full force of the Drachian army. I hadn't seen such amassed power since I witnessed the armies of Akkad attacking Avenus under the guidance of Emperor Sargon. But even with his magic, it had taken him weeks to organize his troops. This army was off the ground in only a couple of hours.

It was not long before we flew over Exmal Mountain and the Althing. The Althing still took my breath away. It was such a frightening design: the stone columns around the arena reached into the skies like talons. This was the place where blood battles were fought, where dragon kings or queens were crowned, and it had stood there for thousands of years, even when the giants and the dragons shared this land. Once again, I longed for the wise and kind voice of Vecterix. He may have been half mad, but he was more sane than most of the dragons in this army.

Brax and I had fought on behalf of the king in that arena and had won, ensuring Kon's rule.

The same king who now was sending mortals to their deaths.

The assassin-trained part of my mind knew there was logic in Kon's tactical decision. But that decision was easier to make when the ones being sacrificed were not his kin. I wracked my mind trying to find another plan that would work, but the only other option that popped up was to retreat. The dragons of Drachia would never entertain that idea.

And as we headed southeast, more dragons joined us from other outposts, including a legion of Quants with massive boulders clutched in their talons. These dragons were so strong that it didn't seem to strain them at all to be carrying that weight. Maybe the Quants should just fall from the sky on top of the giants. They would be massive enough to crush our enemies.

You don't have to grip so tight, Brax sent the thought to me.

Sorry, I didn't realize I was. Did it pinch you?

Pinch? Don't be ridiculous. You couldn't ever hurt me. Just relax. Let your training take over.

He was right. I had been overthinking a situation I couldn't control. My strength was draining because every part of my body, my legs and my hands were clinging to Brax as if he were a log caught in a river of white water.
